OldNeumanntapr Notes-
The Cal Poly Performing Arts Center is an amazing theater. It holds around 1,400, and has two balconies that wrap around. The PAC has AMAZING acoustics! Thanks to Dan Gale, the Los Lobos archivist, for putting me on the guest list so I could record this amazing show. Los Lobos played traditional Mexican acoustic songs, plus their own acoustic material, and performed in conjunction with the dance group ‘Ballet Folklorico Mexicano’. The dancers performed their routines while Los Lobos played behind them, plus used pre-recorded dance songs, which were removed in Audacity, leaving just the Los Lobos material. The edits were made as seamlessly as possible.

I got to the PAC at 5:45 PM and found that John, from Santa Cruz, had a pro video camera system already plugged into the XLR board outputs. I asked Roger, the PAC’s house soundman, if he had any XLR splitters and fortunately he was able to obtain a set from the equipment room backstage. I ran my Tascam DR-100mkII off the board with my brand new Canare Star Quad XLRs, but because of band policy I cannot share that recording. Please don’t ask. Not having another flash recorder, I chose to dust off my old Sony D5 and run that through the Neumanns, as my DAT recorders have all died. I was surprised at how good the D5 sounded. It was nice to master another show with it, after so many years. I still use it for cassette transfers but haven’t recorded live with it for a while. I used the Dolby B circuit because I knew I would transfer the master to digital and wanted to keep tape hiss to a minimum. I set up my stand at the left corner of the soundboard and sat in the handicapped seat
s which fortunately had not been sold. Since the first set was less than 45 minutes I didn’t have to worry about a tape flip in that set. There was one tape flip in the second set but no music was lost, just a brief bit of on-stage dialog. Thanks again to Dan Gale, Roger the PAC’s FOH soundman, and Karen and the staff at the Performing Arts Center. Thanks also to Mando Tavarez, Los Lobos FOH sound tech, and of course, The ‘Wolves of East LA’!

Do NOT Convert To MP3.
Enjoy! Share freely, don’t sell, play nice, don’t run with scissors, etc. ;)
